The 85th Masters tees off on Thursday, just five months after Dustin Johnson claimed his first green jacket at Augusta National in November.
For the first time since the golf major began in 1934, the PGA Tour postponed last year's annual April tournament to November because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The only other instance in which the Masters was not played in April was from 1943-1945, when the event was cancelled because of World War II. During that span, Augusta was transformed into a farm for cattle and turkeys in order to assist in the war effort.
Back in its original April time slot in 2021, a tradition unlike any other will look familiar once again, with a limited number of spectators permitted to attend this once-in-a-lifetime event.
World No. 1 Dustin Johnson continues to play at an elite level and will enter the Masters as the frontrunner. If he can top the leaderboard a second straight time, he will become the fourth player, behind Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, and Nick Faldo, to win back-to-back Masters.
2020 U.S. Open champ Bryson DeChambeau will also draw interest from bettors. The 27-year-old has posted five top-10 finishes in eight appearances on the PGA Tour this season, including a victory at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March.
The quest for a green jacket will not come easy against an exclusive field featuring several past Masters winners, including Patrick Reed, Jordan Spieth, Bubba Watson, and Phil Mickelson.
Spieth has seen a resurgence in his game recently and could achieve a breakthrough at the place where he won his first major in 2015.
On the road to his Masters triumph, Spieth made history as the first player to lead from start to finish at the tournament since Raymond Floyd in 1976.
