The Masters: Adjusted Odds and Free Picks for Saturday
Heading into the 2019 Masters Tournament third round, one name stands out among the favorites. Eldrick Tont “Tiger” Woods offers +700 odds to continue his hot play at Augusta National and win the Masters. Tiger’s not alone, though. He’s got competition among the favorites to win his fifth Green Jacket.
2-of-4 golfers listed among the favorites could regress on Saturday. Dustin Johnson shot a 68 Round 1. He shot a 70 Round 2. A 70 at Augusta National is 2 strokes under par, but DJ’s form took a hit from Thursday to Friday.
Brooks Koepka’s form took a bigger hit. Koepka shot an awesome 66 in Round 1. In the second round, he could only muster a 71.
With both DJ and Brooks’ form heading south, it’s hard to justify a wager on either at +700.
Alternatively, it’s not hard to justify a wager on Francesco Molinari. The Italian golfer swung his way to a 70 first round and a 67 second round.
Molinari’s going to be tough to catch because he improved from Round 1 to Round 2. That means he worked out some of his previous challenges from Thursday to Friday.
However, he’s not the play among the favorites. How can we not back Tiger Woods at +700? Tiger had a lot thrown his way on Friday, including almost face planting after tripping over a security guard, and still shot an awesome 68. Like Francesco, Tiger learned something from Thursday to Friday. He should play even better on Saturday. Back Tiger if you’re looking for a favorite.
Pick: Tiger Woods
Any of the 5 golfers listed above can secure a green jacket. The golfer that we must take the most serious to upset the favorites is Jon Rahm. Rahm shot an awesome -11 at last year’s Masters Tournament.
Here’s the thing about the -11, though, he played his best after the first round. Rahm shot a 75 last year on Thursday. On Friday, he shot a 68, then a 65 on Saturday, and finally a 69 on Sunday.
This year, Rahm’s only 2 strokes off after a 69 and a 70. If he produces a magical Saturday on April 13, just like he did a year ago, he could enter Sunday atop the leaderboard. Not bad for a golfer offering +1825.
Pick: Jon Rahm
Rickie Fowler is only 4 strokes off. He could most definitely play his way into contention. With some luck, he could win it.
Rory needs some help, but if any golfer can win a major tournament after being 7 strokes down with only 2 rounds left, it’s McIlroy.
Although both players can pull off amazing victories this weekend, the underdog with the best shot is Phil Mickelson. Lefty’s 3 strokes off the leaders with two rounds to play. Not only is he still within earshot, but he’s also won 3 Green Jackets.
Mickelson wouldn’t need much effort to be within one or two strokes heading into Sunday.
Pick: Phil Mickelson
