The Case for Tommy Fleetwood in the 2019 Masters

After failing to make the cut in his first Masters appearance two years ago, Fleetwood shot 66 in the third round last year and was tied for sixth entering Sunday at Augusta National. He didn’t carry the momentum forward, sliding to 17th after a final-round 74, but the experience proved beneficial.
“It takes you a little time to get used to the atmosphere at majors,” the 28-year-old Englishman told Augusta.com. “I feel a lot of (Augusta) suits my game, and I enjoyed playing there.”
Fleetwood, who hasn’t missed the cut in a major since his 2017 Masters debut, went on to finish 12th in the British Open and second in the U.S. Open last year. He’s continued to play well in 2019, tying for third in the Arnold Palmer Invitational and for fifth in the Players Championship in his only starts, and appears poised for a breakthrough this weekend.
Fleetwood became known as a world-class ball striker after joining the European Tour in 2010 and evolved into one of the sport’s best players because of his mastery of the big stick, ranking 23rd by driving distance (306.9 yards) in 2018. His length and iron play are tailor-suited to major championships and the world’s 13th-ranked golfer possesses the game to challenge this weekend.
And he has the attitude. Fleetwood plays aggressively and labeled his third- and fifth-place results this year disappointing.
“Winning is what it’s all about,” Fleetwood told PGAtour.com. “The big tournaments—the Players and Masters—I want to win them, not from a financial standpoint. It would be nice to have them on my résumé.”
