Final PGA Tour playoff push comes at Wyndham Championship

The PGA Tour heads to Greensboro, North Carolina this week, as Sedgefield Country Club plays host to the regular-season finale and last chance to qualify for the FedEx Cup Playoffs. The majority of the well-positioned big guns have already taken their NetJets to the beach, so don't expect to see Major Brooks (first) or Roaring Rory (second) duel again this week. If not the famous faces, then who will take flight in the Wyndham Championship?

First in flight...

Webb Simpson (+900) and Hideki Matsuyama (+1400) are the favorites to be the Wright Brothers in this week's equation, as both are in search for their first 2019 victory. Simpson, 33, hoisted the Wyndham Championship trophy back in 2011, and more recently was The Players champion just last year. He's had a solid 2019 campaign, with top-30 finishes in all four major tournaments. While Matsuyama has been one of the most consistent players on tour this year, with only one missed cut in 20 starts, he too has failed to launch when it matters most. They both are comfortably in the playoff picture, so this will be a mere tune-up. I'd steer clear of the two this week.

The Biltmore bet...

Defending champion Brandt Snedeker (+2150) shook the Greensboro ground last year, when he set the course record in the first round (59). Snedeker ultimately coasted to a three-shot victory over Pan Cheng-Tsung and Webb Simpson. The two-time Wyndham winner clearly loves the Donald Ross-designed course and at +2150 is worth a serious look with a potential estate-sized return.

Tar Heel tender

In order to qualify for next week's playoffs, beginning with The Northern Trust, you must scrap your way inside the top 125 in FedEx Cup points. Teetering on the bubble, Alex Noren (+4000) and Daniel Berger (+9000) both need solid weeks for a playoff berth. Berger has a top-10 finish this year (Puerto Rico Open) and Noren is coming off of a tie for 12th at last week's WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational. Look for Noren to play the role of a Wolfpack buzzer-beater, while he Valvano vaults into the postseason. He is well worth today's lucky parking lot penny pick-up in hopes of a Cinderella story at Sedgefield.

Flying high...

PGA Tour rookie Collin Morikawa (+1750) is beaming with confidence after his first professional win last week (the Barracuda Championship). The 22-year-old Morikawa finished tied for 35th in his first major this year (US Open) and has not checked the rear-view since. Given that the field of the Wyndham Championship mirrors that of last week's Barracuda, I'll be riding in Collin Morikawa's Wright Flyer this week, as he soars in back-to-back professional victories.
