Justin Thomas beat Luke List in a playoff at the 2018 Honda Classic. Both Thomas and List shot a -8. But just because Thomas won The Honda Classic last year, it doesn’t mean that he’s a lock to win it this year. What might be a reason to make him a lock is how well he’s hitting the ball.

Thomas has made the cut in all 7 tournaments played. More importantly, he’s finished in the Top-10 in 5-of-7 tournaments. He even finished in the Top 10 last week in the WGC-Mexico Championship. Is Thomas the play?

If you like Thomas, then go for it, but we should look at some 2019 Honda Classic outsiders as well.

 There’s a lot of ways to go here. Luke List is tempting, but he’s developed a strange pattern where he makes the cut and then misses the cut. He missed the cut in the Waste Management Phoenix Open before making the cut in the Genesis Open. He’s due to miss the cut in The Honda Classic if that wonky pattern holds up. Not only that, but there’s a chance Luke overcompensates for almost beating Thomas last year. That could hurt his game.

Webb Simpson has made the cut in all 5 tournaments played. He heads to The Honda Classic off a disappointing 39th place finish in the WGC-Mexico, but at least he made the cut. Not only that, Simpson doesn’t often play 3 straight tournaments where he doesn’t make a move over the weekend.

He finished twentieth in the Waste Management Phoenix Open. So, he shouldn’t play poorly this weekend. Last year, Simpson shot a 276, 4-under. That was only 4 strokes off List and Thomas. He can win on Sunday.

Things fell apart for Alex Noren after finishing eighth in the Hero World Challenge. Although he shot a 68 in Round 2 during the Farmers Insurance Open, it wasn’t good enough to get over the 76 he shot in Round 1.

After missing the cut in the Farmers Insurance, Noren finished 44th in the Waste Management Phoenix Open. He followed that up with a 62nd place finish in the WGC-Mexico. Noren most definitely isn’t playing great golf right now.

But, he finished only a stroke off List and Thomas in last year’s The Honda Classic. Every golfer has ups and downs. If Noren’s on the cusp of going up, he could win this weekend at massive +4800 odds.
