2018 Dell Technologies Championship - FedEx Cup Round 2
by Alastair Bull
Two foreigners and the defending champion could be the best players to follow in the 2018 Dell Technologies Championship at TPC Boston, the second tournament in the FedEx Cup playoffs.Thirty players will be knocked out of next week’s third tournament, the BMW Championship, but it’s likely that the winner will come from players who are all but certain of being around next week.
World number one Dustin Johnson is a +900 favorite for the tournament, which begins Aug. 31, but after finishing tied for 27th in the PGA Championship and tied for 11thin last week’s Northern Trust tournament, his odds don’t possess great value.
However, last year’s champion, Justin Thomas, is in good form. Like Johnson he missed the cut in the British Open, but since then he has won the Bridgestone International, tied for sixth in the PGA Championship, and tied for eighth in the Northern Trust. He won by three strokes last year, and his odds of +1000 are much more appealing than those of Johnson.
Another with a good record at TPC Boston is Rory McIlroy. He has won the event twice, in 2012 and 2016, and he is in good form, finishing tied for second at the British Open and tied for sixth at the Bridgestone International prior to a tie for 50thin the PGA Championship. He can be found at +1600 odds for the 2018 Dell Technologies Championship.
One player who has struck form at the right time is Australian Adam Scott. He will need to play well in this and the BMW Championship to ensure he’s in the 30-man field for the last event, the Tour Championship, but in his past two tournaments he finished third in the PGA Championship and tied for fifth in the Northern Trust.
Scott also has form at this tournament, having won the inaugural event in 2003 and finishing tied for second the following year behind Vijay Singh. He is at +2800.
Tied with Scott for second in 2004 was Tiger Woods, and as always there will be great interest in his performance. He produced great drama at the British Open and the PGA Championship, but his 2018 Dell Technologies Championship odds of +1800 look a little short.
A better prospect could be Tony Finau. Though he hasn’t won this year, he has been extremely consistent and was runner-up to Thomas at the Northern Trust. He looks good value at +2800.
2018 Dell Technologies Championship Picks: Justin Thomas, +1000, Adam Scott +2800 (both to win outright)
