Colts' Super Bowl odds into freefall following Luck’s retirement

The Indianapolis Colts are officially out of Luck. The team's Super Bowl LIV odds have plummeted from +1600 to +5500 following quarterback Andrew Luck's stunning announcement that he intends to retire from the NFL after playing just six seasons in the league.

The 29-year-old delivered the news during an emotional press conference Saturday evening, in which he cited mental and physical fatigue and the unceasing "cycle of injury, pain, rehab. Injury, pain, rehab."

"This is not an easy decision," Luck told reporters during an impromptu press conference. "Honestly it’s the hardest decision of my life. But it is the right decision for me."

Luck's career was cut short by injuries

A four-time Pro Bowl selection, Luck appeared in 86 of a possible 112 games after he entered the league out of Stanford. The veteran QB was sidelined repeatedly by injuries, most notably a persistent shoulder issue that forced him to miss nine games in 2015 and the entirety of the 2017 season.

Luck appeared to get his career back on track last season, when he started 16 games and threw for 4,593 yards and 39 touchdowns. He finished in the top five in passing yards and completions and was named the 2018 Comeback Player of the Year. Unfortunately he has struggled with a calf strain and high-ankle issue this summer and did not appear in any of Indianapolis' three preseason games.

Luck is ranked first all-time in pass attempts per game and third in completions per game.

Colts will give the reins to Brisset

The Colts will hand the offense over to Jacoby Brissett, who started 15 games in Luck's absence in 2017. The 26-year-old QB saw only limited action last season, but is a savvy Super Bowl champion who understands the system well and should step in seamlessly.

Indianapolis' first regular season game is Sunday, September 8 against the Los Angeles Chargers.
