Florida Gators College Football Info
There Florida Gators is one of the founding members of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). While the program had always been respected, it had failed to be consistent at the highest level until former quarterback Steve Spurrier signed on to lead them in 1990 as their head coach. After a strong 9-2 SU season where the team won the SEC but was ineligible for the post season, the Spurrier-led Gators would go on to assemble multiple winning seasons which included six conference titles and a National Championship in 1996 where the team dismantled the rival Florida State Seminoles 52-20 in the Sugar Bowl. When the NFL came calling for Spurrier, Ron Zook would take over from 2002-2004 but amassed a meager 23-15 SU record that included three consecutive bowl game defeats.Enter Urban Meyer, who almost immediately turned the team around improving to 9-3 SU in his first game back while delivering a win in the 2005 Outback Bowl. The following season, Meyer and the Gators would roll the Ohio State Buckeyes to win a national championship with Chris Leak and Tim Tebow at quarterback. Two years later, the Gators would reclaim glory with another victory in the 2009 BCS Championship where Tebow was named offensive MVP by out maneuvering Oklahoma's Sam Bradford. In the 2009 regular season, Meyer and the Gators would go 13-1 SU but fail to make the BCS Championship due to a loss against Alabama in the SEC Championship game. They would match up with the Cincinnati Bearcats in the Sugar Bowl and dismantle them 51-24. The 2010 campaign would be Meyer's last and he would fail to capture the magic, falling to 8-5 SU. Despite this the team was invited to the Outback Bowl, where they defeated Penn State.
Replacing Meyer in 2011, Will Muschamp inherited an unenviable rebuild but was able to steer the team to a 7-6 SU season. He then went 11-2 SU in 2012 before losing the 2013 Sugar Bowl to Louisville 23-33. Jim McElwain recently led the cause from 2015-2017, winning two division titles at the onset.
Overall, Florida has three national championships and eight SEC Championships. Among their most notable alumni are Tebow, Danny Wuerffel, Jack Youngblood, Emmitt Smith and Fred Taylor.
New head coach Dan Mullen takes over at the University of Florida in his first year as head coach after the Gators went a dismal 4-7 SU last season. With a favorable schedule this year, the Gators look to be back in the talks of an SEC East title.
