NCAAF: Michigan State poised to upset Penn State in Week 9
We're back with our weekly college football upset watch! Join us as we shine the spotlight on five underdogs ready to spring a shocker (all games Saturday).
If we study the first six games closely, Northwestern lost the five games it should have lost. The one win came against UNLV, a team the Wildcats should beat. Losses at Stanford, Wisconsin and Nebraska are expected, as are home defeats to Ohio State and Michigan State.
In comparison, Iowa's best win is a one-point victory against Iowa State. These teams are more alike than they might appear at first glance, but Northwestern has more losses because it has played tougher teams. Northwestern will win this game outright.
The Huskies have played poorly and only average around 320 yards per game. The only problem for UMass is the Minutemen only average 300.
Home-field advantage will be the difference, and UMass will keep it close. UMass quarterback Randall West is working his way back from injury and this is his third start off the layoff. Look for West to lead the UMass offense to an upset victory.
Tennessee lost to Alabama by more than 20 points last week, but the game was closer than the scoreboard suggested.
You'd expect this line to be around seven points, but when you read between the lines, it appears sharp bettors are siding with the Vols.
Every game is important for quarterback Justin Herbert and the Ducks, but this might be the biggest game of the season for the Cougars.
I'll make the bold prediction that Washington State quarterback Anthony Gordon will outplay Herbert in a 56-53 Cougars upset.
#20 Iowa at Northwestern (+9.5), noon ET, ESPN2
Northwestern has played poorly, and its 1-5 record is ugly, but can the Wildcats get one this week at home against Iowa? I believe they will.If we study the first six games closely, Northwestern lost the five games it should have lost. The one win came against UNLV, a team the Wildcats should beat. Losses at Stanford, Wisconsin and Nebraska are expected, as are home defeats to Ohio State and Michigan State.

#6 Penn State at Michigan State (+5.5), 3:30 p.m. ET, ABC
Penn State narrowly escaped against Michigan last week at home but won't survive this week. Michigan State had last week off to rest after two brutal losses at Ohio State and Wisconsin, and a bye might be just what the doctor ordered. Penn State has historically regressed on the road, and this week will be no different.Connecticut at Massachusetts (+10), 3:30 p.m. ET
The fact that UConn is favored by 10 against anyone is mind boggling.
South Carolina at Tennessee (+4), 4 p.m. ET, SEC Network
South Carolina shocked the world two weeks ago, when the Gamecocks upset Georgia between the hedges. Last week they came back down to earth, and Florida knocked them off.Tennessee lost to Alabama by more than 20 points last week, but the game was closer than the scoreboard suggested.
You'd expect this line to be around seven points, but when you read between the lines, it appears sharp bettors are siding with the Vols.
Washington State (+14) at #11 Oregon, 10:30 p.m. ET, ESPN
Oregon needs to win out to have any chance to make the College Football Playoff, and that may even still be up in the air. The Ducks came from behind to take down Washington last week and are deserving favorites, and while it’s been a tricky season for the Cougars, they got things right to defeat Colorado 41-10.Every game is important for quarterback Justin Herbert and the Ducks, but this might be the biggest game of the season for the Cougars.
I'll make the bold prediction that Washington State quarterback Anthony Gordon will outplay Herbert in a 56-53 Cougars upset.
