Kansas has lowest odds to win NCAA title despite suspensions
Kansas is back on top. And I don’t mean in the WWE Power Rankings.
Despite the brawl with Kansas State at Allen Fieldhouse, which saw four Kansas players receive suspensions, Kansas (+900) is at the top of BetAmerica’s NCAA championship futures odds board.
The Jayhawks passed Louisville, Ohio State, Gonzaga, and Duke this week.

Fight fallout
Kansas reserve forward Silvio De Sousa, who played a major role in the incident, received a 12-game suspension. Sophomore forward David McCormack (7.5 points, 4.7 rebounds per game) will also miss two games. De Sousa will be out for Kansas until March 7, in the last game of the regular season, against No. 22 Texas Tech. They’ll be back at full force come tournament time, but I don’t like all the distractions surrounding this team. Kansas is far from a lock to win the national title, but in this season of parity, that can be said about many teams at the top.
In a season where so much is unknown, the safest bet would be to rely on the blue-blood programs. If so much is equal headed into the tournament, it stands to reason that the coaches and teams with more experience in those unique situations would be better plays.
Who’s a safer bet?
Baylor has been consistent and has an impressive résumé, so it’s no surprise it landed on the top of the AP Poll. The Bears are also tied for third in the futures betting at +1000. The Bears are 6-0 in Big 12 play for the first time in 71 years. This season marks only the second time they’ve ever been ranked as the top team in the country, but their inexperience is a concern. In a season where so much is unknown, the safest bet would be to rely on the blue-blood programs.
