Oscar’s Grind strategy for roulette and blackjack: Pros and cons
We all love a gambling strategy, mostly because it’s fun to try something new. So long as we understand that no betting strategy is guaranteed to bring success, we can enjoy the challenge.
One popular system is the Oscar’s Grind strategy. Although it’s no more or less certain to win you money in the long run, it does have distinct advantages over other betting systems like the Martingale system.
The reason, and one that will keep you in the game for much longer if you bump up against a run of bad luck, is that the bet sizes do not need to increase at an alarming rate. The more comfortable limits make the Oscar betting system a favorite of recreational gamblers.
What is the Oscar’s Grind strategy?
It’s called grind for a reason. You can spend a lot of time grinding out a small profit at BetAmerica Casino. Happily, you won’t necessarily lose much if things go belly-up.
The system is reasonably straightforward. You start with a low bet, let’s say $1, and your sequence will end when you make a net profit equivalent to your opening bet size. So, a grand total of $1 profit in our example.
Meeting your target means following the Oscar grind in blackjack, roulette, or even baccarat – any casino game that offers 1:1 odds, like red or black in roulette.
If you win your first bet, your sequence is over straight away, since you have already made your $1 profit. Hoorah! However, if you lose, you must repeat your stake, so bet another $1. You lose again and are now $2 down. On the third $1 bet, you win, taking you back to $1 down again. But this time, because you won the last round, you must increase your stake by $1. You win again with this $2 bet, taking your total winnings to $1 and marking the end of the sequence.
Many sequences will last much longer, of course. The golden rules are:
- Lose a round, repeat the bet
- Win a round, add one unit to the previous bet
The new, higher bet remains in play until you next win a round, in which case it goes up again. At no time can your stake ever come down (with one exception, which you will see in a moment).
Here is an example of how a long sequence might play out:

You’ll see it took eight rounds to win our $1 profit in this sequence. Notice that we only bet $1 on the last round, not $4, which would be the usual unit increase from the previous winning round. That’s because you should only ever bet the minimum if you can make your profit target. In this case, we only needed to win one more buck, so our bet came down accordingly.
Swings and roundabouts
Oscar’s Grind strategy generally requires a strong winning run to end in profit. As the name suggests, you’ll probably be battling to and fro for a while, but you need a succession of winning hands to hit your target eventually.
Unfortunately, nothing is certain in gambling. There is no certainty you will go on that magical winning run in blackjack or roulette. You could, therefore, be sitting there, grinding away for a very long time. Because you could be at the tables for a while, your starting sequence bet should be small enough to allow for the gradual bet size increases. It’s recommended you start with at least 1/12th of your available session bankroll.
A grind, yes, but at least you’ll have a good deal of fun in the process.
Try the Oscar betting system for yourself
Some people try a modified Oscar’s Grind, tweaked to suit them, but stick with the official version at first.
