Fury's moniker is inspired by his heritage. He comes from a long line of bare-knuckle boxers, who were part of the nomadic Irish Travellers community. Traditionally, the title "Gypsy King" is bestowed upon the top bare-knuckle boxer, and Fury had two "Gypsy Kings" in his bloodline — one on each side of his family.
Fury's father, John, also competed by the name of “Gypsy John Fury” and supported his family through bare-knuckle prize fighting. John spent much of his life with the Irish Travellers but settled down in Manchester, where Tyson was born.
Who is Tyson Fury’s trainer?
Since 2019, Fury has trained under SugarHill Steward, the nephew of prominent boxing trainer Emanuel Steward.
Fury began boxing at age 10 and learned the sport under the guidance of his father and two uncles, Hughie and Peter. Hughie trained Fury from 2009 until 2012, before Peter assumed the role of trainer from 2012-17.
From 2016 to 2018, Fury stepped away from professional boxing while he struggled with depression and weight gain. Trainer Ben Davison helped oversee Fury's comeback and cornered him against Wilder in 2018.
Just months before Fury's rematch with Wilder in 2020, Fury parted ways with Davison, as he felt he was "going a little bit stale.”
He then hired Steward in Davison's place and quickly captured the WBC world heavyweight title belt with Steward in his corner.
Who is Tyson Fury married to?
Fury began dating wife Paris when she was 16 and he was 17. Both come from Catholic traveller families.
The pair married in 2008 and have five children together, with one more on the way in 2021.
What is Tyson Fury's net worth?
Fury earned around $57 million in 2020, as he cashed in $26 million for his rematch with Wilder in February, and made $7 million from endorsements last year.
In May of last year, he ranked as the highest paid fighter in the world, ahead of Joshua and UFC star Conor McGregor.
